Gibbs set for metatarsal surgery

Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs will have surgery on Wednesday after breaking a metatarsal during the 2-0 Champions League win over Standard Liege. The 20-year-old injured his left foot in a challenge with Liege's Eliaqium Mangala late in Tuesday's game.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confirmed the seriousness of the injury and criticised midfielder Mangala.

"It was a very bad challenge by the number 22 and was not his first try. It doesn't look good for Gibbs," he said.

England Under-21 defender Gibbs had only just returned to fitness from an injury to his right foot suffered while away on international duty and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Sunderland vs Arsenal Results..

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Sunderland had seriously dented their hopes of mounting a serious Premier League title challenge.

Their first defeat in 14 games saw the Gunners slip eight points off the pace set by league leaders Chelsea.

But after the narrow defeat at the Stadium of Light which came via a 71st minute winner from Darren Bent, Wenger offered no excuses.

"It is a massive setback because you need consistency to win a title," declared the Frenchman after seeing his side slip down to third place in the table.

"Today we were not capable of doing that and it raises question marks.

"We lost a game and we can only fault ourselves because we didn't score.

"Some players were not at their best and we gave a goal away on the only situation where Sunderland could score one today, a set-piece, that sums it up well.

"We did not create enough chances either and there was a lack of penetration."

Eduardo signs new Arsenal deal

Croatia striker Eduardo has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal, having overcome a career-threatening leg injury to resume his career with the Gunners.

The 26-year-old moved to England in the summer of 2007 from Dinamo Zagreb and has since scored 18 goals in 48 appearances, having seen his career halted by an horrific injury sustained against Birmingham City in February 2008.

This season Eduardo has netted three times for Arsenal, with manager Arsene Wenger delighted to have secured the future of a valuable member of his squad.

He told the club's official website: "We're delighted that Eduardo has signed a new long-term contract with us.

"Eduardo is a special player with huge talent and natural goalscoring ability and we're all so happy that he has committed his future to Arsenal Football Club.

"We have also seen in his come back from injury, Eduardo is a human being full of courage, bravery and commitment. His full recovery from this injury is a testament to Eduardo's character.

"We all look forward to enjoying Eduardo's performances in an Arsenal shirt for a long time to come."

Gunners wait on Gibbs scan

Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs could be set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury while playing for the England Under-21 side on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old left-back, who has been the first-choice at the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks while Gael Clichy recovers from a stress-fracture of his back, lasted just 20 minutes of England's goalless draw with Lithuania in Vilnius.

The full-back will be assessed by Arsenal's medical staff on Wednesday before the full extent of his injury is known.

Clichy is still some way short of making a return to first-team action so any lengthy lay-off for Gibbs is likely to be a major blow to manager Arsene Wenger ahead of Premier League games against Sunderland and Chelsea on successive weekends.

The youngster has only made six appearances for the north London club this season but has already been touted for a call into Fabio Capello's full England squad for next summer's World Cup.

Arsenal are already without a host of injured stars with Robin van Persie, Johan Djourou, Denilson, Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner all currently sidelined.

Lampard ruled out of Gunners clash

It was originally feared Lampard was facing a six-week lay off after damaging his thigh while on England duty.
The midfielder spent seven hours cramped on a plane on the way to Qatar for Saturday's Brazil friendly.
Lampard strained his left thigh while sprinting during England's first training session.
But on Friday, Chelsea confirmed the midfielder will be out for three weeks with a muscle tear.
A Chelsea spokesman said: "It has been confirmed that Frank suffered a muscle tear in his left thigh while away with the England national team.
"The midfielder reported back at Cobham this morning (Friday), having flown back from the Middle East.
"The Chelsea medical department's initial impression is that he may take approximately three weeks to recover."
Chelsea will claim his £151,000-a-week wages in compensation from the Football Association while he is sidelined.
Lampard and the rest of the England squad were reportedly forced to spend the long-haul flight to Doha on a charter plane designed for short-haul only.
England's players are used to having flat beds for long journeys and were allegedly shocked to find seats which hardly reclined.
Several players are understood to have complained of cramp and muscle pain after the flight.
The midfielder spent six weeks on the sidelines with a similar injury last season.
He will now miss their Champions League clash in Porto and their Premier League battle against Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have suffered another injury headache with captain John Terry struggling with an ankle problem.
The 28-year-old Chelsea defender was hurt during a training run although England boss Fabio Capello hopes he will be fit to face Brazil.
"He was running on his own and twisted his ankle. I am confident he will be fit for tomorrow," said Capello.
"The doctors think he will be okay but I won't take a risk. If he is not fit, he will not play."
Wayne Rooney will step in as captain if Terry is ruled out.

Bendtner unsure on lay-off

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner fears that he will have to endure surgery on his groin injury that will sideline him for several weeks.

The 21-year-old, who was named as Denmark's Player of the Year for 2009, limped out of last month's north London derby victory against Tottenham Hotspur with the problem.

He said: "It is an immensely great honour to be awarded Player of the Year by the fans.

"I want to thank all those fans who voted for me. I'd also like to thank my parents who have believed in me all the time, and I wish to thank my coaches and my team-mates who made this possible for me.

"I will have to have an operation and I don't know how long I will be out for.''

Meanwhile, Thomas Vermaelen believes the Gunners' excellent start to the season has shown that they will be title challengers this term.

Arsene Wenger's team are currently second in the table, five points behind leaders Chelsea but with a game in hand, following their 4-1 win at Wolverhampton on Saturday.

Vermaelen said: "If we look at the table, we are second and it is a message to other teams that we are involved in the race to be champions.

"It is good that we have had a good series of games. It is important to continue and stay focused on every game because there are a lot of important games."

Wenger reveals title desire

Arsene Wenger is confident that his Arsenal side can challenge for the Premier League title this season after cruising to a 4-1 victory at Wolves on Saturday evening.

The three points lifted the Gunners up to second in the Premier League table, at least until Chelsea's encounter with Manchester United on Sunday.

The win extended Arsenal's unbeaten run to 13 matches in all competitions, although they were helped on their way by two own goals from Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock.

An upbeat Wenger said: "The desire is there (to win the title). We just want to strengthen our belief.

"The most important factor is we play for each other as we do. We have to focus on our performance and continue to develop our style of play.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Vs Arsenal Results

Cesc Fabregas led Arsenal on another goal spree as Wolves became the latest side to fall victim to Arsene Wenger's free-scoring team.

Arsenal took their goal tally to a staggering 55 from just 19 games - with 11 coming in their last three matches - as they moved second in the table on goal difference, two points behind Chelsea.

They were given a helping hand by own goals from Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock.

But Fabregas, who helped create two of the goals, then helped himself to a classy third on the stroke of half-time before Andrey Arshavin pounced on the hour to help Arsenal extend their unbeaten run to 13 games and take their points tally to 19 from a possible 21.

Wolves' set-piece play dominated the early stages and not taking advantage of that proved to their undoing.

Kevin Doyle saw his seventh minute corner from a Nenad Milijas corner cleared off the line by Kieran Gibbs before Sylvan Ebanks-Blake headed another corner narrowly wide.

When Christophe Berra failed to take advantage of a close-range header from another Milijas delivery, Wolverhampton had run out of chances to strike first.

But they were ultimately the masters of their own undoing due in no small part to goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

After Craddock had turned a header from Thomas Vermaelen wide, Fabregas whipped in a 28th minute corner across the face of goal.

Hennessey flapped at the ball with one hand without any effect and could only turn and stare as the ball was deflected into the net off Zubar.

Wolverhampton's luck was out again eight minutes later when Aaron Ramsey led a swift Arsenal counter-attack.

Ramsey picked out Eduardo whose ambitious chip looked to be heading wide before being deflected off the head off Craddock and past the flat-footed Hennessey.

While Wolverhamptons felt hard done with the manner of the first two goals, they could have no complaints with the third as they were cut apart by Arsenal.

Bacary Sagna fed the ball into the path of Eduardo whose neat pass to Fabregas was clinically dispatched by the Arsenal skipper - taking his tally for the season to nine.

Arshavin then set the seal on the win seconds after Hennessey had turned his shot away for a corner.

Fabregas sent over a cross that Hennessey punched straight to Arshavin, whose drive from the edge of the area rolled just inside the near post.

Results for Arsenal Vs Tottenham Hotspur Oct 31

It was a comfortable win for the Gunners in the end who were in control from start to finish. Spurs simply did not turn up. They lacked the grit and determination to make up for the lack of pace and imagination. Arsenal simply passed them to death.

The game opened at a frenetic pace from the first second with the Gunners dictating proceedings. Their slick passing and movement reduced Tottenham Hotspur to the role of spectators for much of the first 20 minutes.

Arsenal kept the pressure on, but strikes on goal by Arshavin and Van Persie were too tame to trouble the Spurs keeper. The goal that their play had promised did come in the 42nd minutes followed by another just seconds later. Arsenal dominate their north London rivals for a comfortable win.
