Wenger not guaranteed to buy

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will bide his time in the transfer window despite bemoaning a lack of options after Sunday's 2-1 FA Cup win over West Ham United.

Aaron Ramsey and Eduardo popped up with late goals to fire the Gunners into the fourth round following a narrow victory at Upton Park.

Key midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Andrey Arshavin missed the game through injury, while Alex Song and Emmanuel Eboue will now depart for the African Cup of Nations.

But despite seeing his options limited further, the Frenchman is still not ready to commit to signing any new players this month.

"As many people say I have the money, I have the desire, but I do not have the player," he explained.

"I do not know what will happen. Basically, it depends how the big guns - Manchester City and Chelsea - will move. Where will they buy? If they buy from English clubs, the market will be busy.

"If they do not buy from English clubs, I think the market will be very quiet because there is not a lot of money around.

"I am not near (to signing) anybody." You can buy your favourite Arsenal Tickets online through our secure and guaranteed online booking system.

Wenger hails in form Gunners

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was pleased that his side were able to build on Sunday's victory against Aston Villa by thrashing Portsmouth 4-1 at Fratton Park on Wednesday.

The festive results have meant that, if the Gunners beat Bolton Wanderers next Wednesday, they will move up to second in the Premier League table, only one point behind leaders Chelsea.

Wenger said after the rout of Pompey: "I believe it was a big game for us because we played a big game on Sunday and sometimes, three days later, you can be less focused.

"But we were committed, focused, and ready for it and played like a real team against a Portsmouth side who fought very hard.

"We were a bit lucky on the first goal but after that we controlled the game. I'm proud of the team because the belief is there and we played like a real team. It was a big game for us tonight. We knew, to keep chasing, it was important to win here.

"Tonight we showed a physical response in the first half when they made it very physical. In midfield we were really up for it and dominated physically.

"I'm not surprised at what we've done since Chelsea, when we lost 3-0. I think people at that time didn't believe what I said. It's good. It shows that not only I can be wrong, but you can all be wrong, too."
